Yup, so far 2018 is not my year.

Kinja'd!!!

This is after charging on my friend’s charger for 8 hours, where his house is in a different town, drive another friend back to his house from that friend’s house in the city then back to my house in the suburb.

I guess 5 years old and a night of lights drain is all it takes.

Thing is, I’m not sure if the charge actually did anything, I checked the manual again:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Valka has a 90AH AGM...

Oh well, guess it’s off to the indie to get the battery checked.

UPDATE: ...and everything is back to normal this morning, no codes, no nothing. I did disconnect my dashcam (had some videos to pull), but not the multi safer, so it was still drawing some power, so I don’t know. Only difference today is it’s -10C outside instead of -25C, and my drive is even shorter to the grocery store.

The M3 keeps telling me the same message, it’s annoying that I have to take my keys out of my pocket to unlock it. To be fair, I think the battery is original to the car.

Yeah they added that logic starting with the E90. My keyless actually works while that message is on though.

Another stupid thing BMW did apparently, was that a running car does NOT charge the battery, only regenerative deceleration does. They did this to reduce the load of the running engine.

I guess it didn’t occur to them that you end up spending more fuel when I have to constantly accelerate and decelerate just to get EfficientDynamics to kick in.

My car just developed an oil leak interestingly, but it only does it when it runs because its a pressure leak (I think I only need to tighten the oil filter, but considering its previous mechanic I suspect it could also be over tighten and broken) so I spent a long time not knowing what caused the goddammed leak, because any time I inspected the car, it was cold and had no visible oil on the underside...

My Solstice does that too, apparently the cause is not an actual leak, just age of the gaskets. After winters and summers when I do oil changes, I would notice the pan gets oiled and dirty, but no puddles or anything.

Dipstick doesn’t even show anything lower.

It seems odd to me that a car would crap out at 7 seven years old and 40k miles...

That’s not a true statement. If the battery is at or near full charge it only charges under decel, but if its low, it will charge off the alternator at all times. Otherwise you could easily kill the battery on a long interstate drive.

That’s what I read though, supposedly from a BMW official documentation.

“You won’t get much charging even on a long highway drive, mainly because the battery receives full charging only when it’s heavily discharged or while engine braking.”

It has to be able to charge outside of engine braking or you could kill the battery just by idling the car for 30-60 minutes.

Battery is probably worn out, and BMWs are overly finicky about batteries. Do your best to try and find another 90 Ah battery. A good indy mechanic should be able to locate the right size and Ah rating plus register it to the car.

I really like my Black & Decker BC15BD battery charger. It’ll automatically charge a battery then when it’s topped up go into float mode. It has a 40 amp engine start mode and can “recondition” (supposedly) a slightly worn battery by doing some pulse thingie that I don’t fully understand.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s also sold as the Stanley BC15BS , they’re the same company, just get whichever is cheaper.

Supposedly AGM batteries should not be reconditioned.

Yeah that might be more for lead acid, which is what I have. You can also replace your AGM with lead acid as long as the car is re-coded for it.

I think for the ASS cars it’s actually required.

Oh, yeah, hadn’t thought about that. E9x and similar can be coded for either lead acid or AGM.
